Report: Cardinals were firm in expecting first-round pick for Josh Rosen

The Arizona Cardinals have drafted quarterback Josh Rosen’s replacement, making Kyler Murray the first overall pick Thursday night. Despite speculation for months that Murray was going to be the pick, general manager Steve Keim waited until the last minute to try to trade Rosen.

According to SI.com’s Robert Klemko, Keim waited until minutes before the draft to try to deal him, and his asking price was firm. He would not accept anything less than a first-round pick for Rosen, the No. 10 overall selection a year ago.

No team was willing to part with one and, as a result, no deal was made. Based on Keim’s comments at the conclusion of the first round, he seems content with keeping Rosen on the roster.

Rosen counts less against the salary cap on the roster than off it. However, his remaining on the roster could lead to some tension in the locker room, as his teammates have been firmly behind him. If Rosen and Murray both compete in the offseason, it could create a rift, especially if the two perform evenly.

Keim’s asking price might have changed. The second round begins this afternoon. Will he settle for a second- or third-round pick, or will he remain firm until someone is desperate for a quarterback?
