Cardinals sign veteran TE Charles Clay, recently cut by Bills

The Arizona Cardinals have taken advantage of another player released by a team before the beginning of free agency. After adding outside linebacker Brooks Reed and cornerback Robert Alford, the Cardinals announced they signed tight end Charles Clay to a one-year contract.

Clay was released by the Buffalo Bills with one year remaining on the five-year contract he signed in 2015.

Clay, at 6-3 and 255 pounds, enters his ninth year in the league, playing four years each with the Bills and Miami Dolphins. Miami drafted him in the sixth round in 2011.

He has 339 career receptions for more than 3,631 yards and has scored 23 touchdowns. From 2013-2017, he averaged 57 receptions and 602 yards with a career-high 69 catches for 759 yards in 2013.

His play dipped last year and he only had 21 catches for 184 yards.

He bolsters Arizona’s tight end group. Ricky Seals-Jones had 34 receptions, but Jermaine Gresham and John Phillips combined for 12. Gresham is a prime candidate to be released.
