Cardinals sign RBs Alfred Morris, Zach Zenner; release CB Trevor Williams

It was reported Tuesday that the Arizona Cardinals would sign veteran running back Alfred Morris with some uncertainty about the availability of David Johnson this week. The team announced this move but also announced the signing of a second running back.

The team announced the addition of Morris and former Detroit Lions running back Zach Zenner.

Both Morris and Zenner visited the Cardinals a month ago.

Morris will give the Cardinals a capable runner behind Chase Edmonds if Johnson can’t play. Morris is a three-time 1,000-yard rusher and has averaged 4.3 yards per attempt in his career. He last played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2018, rushing for 428 yards and two touchdowns.

Zenner played one game for the New Orleans Saints this season, so he can provide at least a little bit of intel as the Cardinals take on the Saints this weekend. His signing suggests that running back D.J. Foster, who is a core special teams player, could miss this weekend. Zenner played four seasons for the Detroit Lions, played a lot on special teams for them.

Zenner’s best season was in 2016 when he rushed for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and also caught 18 passes.

The Cardinals had a vacancy on the roster after releasing linebacker Ramik Wilson Tuesday but had to make one other move. They released cornerback Trevor Williams, whom they claimed off waivers two weeks ago.
