Cardinals sign former Falcons cornerback Robert Alford to 3-year deal

It didn’t take long for former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Robert Alford to find a new home in the NFL. According to a release on the official team website, the Arizona Cardinals have signed Alford to a three-year deal. The Cards did not disclose financial terms of the contract, but according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, his base is $22.5 million with $13.5 million in guarantees.

Alford was released by Atlanta earlier this week in a cost-cutting move. The Falcons saved $7.9 million in salary cap space for 2019 and another $9 million in 2020.

Arizona is undergoing another major overhaul this offseason. They fired their head coach Steve Wilks after just one year and replaced him with former USC coach Kliff Kingsbury. It was rumored that Steve Sarkisian would join his staff but he returned to Nick Saban at Alabama instead.

Alford was an inconsistent player for the Falcons from week to week and season to season. His 2018 campaign was bad enough to make cutting him an easy decision for the team. Perhaps he will be able to revitalize his career with Patrick Peterson and the Cardinals.
