CINCINNATI _ Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz, one of the leading rookies in the National League, has a hairline fracture in his right thumb and will miss at least several weeks, general manager John Mozeliak announced Monday.
Diaz met with a specialist in Miami on Monday, and X-rays taken of the thumb revealed the fracture.
He suffered the injury Sunday when he was hit by a pitch from Miami Marlins starter Andrew Cashner.
Diaz will go on the disabled list, though Mozeliak said the shortstop will "likely miss more time" than the minimal 15 days. Jhonny Peralta will take over at shortstop on Tuesday when he joins the active roster.
Diaz was batting .312 with 14 homers and 57 RBIs, and was the only Cardinal to appear in last month's All-Star Game.
The Cardinals will also add Brandon Moss (ankle injury) to the roster on Tuesday.
Matt Carpenter (oblique strain) will play both second base and third base this week on his rehab assignment in Class AA Springfield. Mozeliak said Carpenter will play both positions when he returns to the majors, which could happen as soon as Friday when the team returns to Busch Stadium.
