Cardinals select Washington CB Byron Murphy with 33rd overall pick in draft

The Arizona Cardinals have added a Washington defensive back to their team for the third season in a row. Using the first pick of the second round, kicking off Day 2 of the 2019 draft, they selected Washington cornerback Byron Murphy.

Murphy is a hometown kid, having played high school ball at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale.

He redshirted his freshman year at Washington, played only six games the next year but shone in 2018. He had 58 tackles, four for a loss, four interceptions and 13 pass breakups.

He is 5-11 and 198 pounds and can play both outside and inside cornerback.

He joins Budda Baker, whom the Cardinals drafted in the second round in 2017, and Zeke Turner as former Washington defensive backs on the roster.

He is known as a ballhawk with great instincts, making up for a lack of elite athleticism. He is physical and hard-working.
