Cardinals’ salary cap space down to just over $6M

The Arizona Cardinals entered the offseason with a decent amount of salary cap space. They added a lot of pieces to the team in free agency, but now that space is almost gone.

According to the NFLPA salary cap report on Wednesday, the Cardinals had only $6.1 million left over.

That covers the top 51 contracts on their roster. When the season begins, it will count all 53 players on the active roster and anyone on the PUP list, injured reserve and the practice squad.

They technically will have about $3.88 million more in cap space available; that’s the amount of salary cornerback Patrick Peterson will forfeit in the first six weeks of the season because of his suspension, but that space is not available until the season begins and the suspension begins.

They have all their draft picks signed. However, teams typically like to have a reserve of about $5 million to deal with injuries and midseason signings if players have to go on injured reserve.

At this point, it is highly unlikely that any player the Cardinals sign will make more than the league minimum.
