Cardinals rookie pitcher Alex Reyes, a week removed from his brief return to the major-league rotation, is visiting a specialist in Philadelphia on Wednesday to get a second opinion on the muscle strain around his right (pitching) shoulder.
Reyes pitched four innings last Wednesday in Milwaukee in his first start since elbow surgery, and he was removed from the game abruptly when the team noticed a drop in velocity.
It has since been confirmed that Reyes felt fatigue and soreness in the shoulder after his final rehab start, at Class AAA Memphis _ six days before his big-league return.
"He felt he could pitch through it," Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said. "Turned out ... he couldn't."
Reyes is meeting meet with Dr. Anthony Romeo, an orthopedic surgeon who has had an affiliation with the Chicago White Sox. The appointment is a consultation to determine (or confirm) the severity and scope of a lat strain diagnosed by the Cardinals' medical staff.
