Cardinals release veteran S D.J. Swearinger

The Arizona Cardinals made a bit of a surprising move on Monday following their 27-10. They released safety D.J. Swearinger, who had played almost every snap on defense this season.

He started all four games for the Cardinals this season. He had eight tackles on Sunday and 28 through four games and a forced fumble.

He was acquired via a waiver claim last December when he was released by the Washington Redskins.

He was expected to be a leader and a physical force. His play on the field was lacking and he was often pointed at as one of the big problems why the Cardinals have struggled to cover tight ends.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury, when he spoke to the media on Monday, he would not elaborate on the decision to cut him. “We’re going to make decisions in the best interest of the organization at this time and I’ll just leave it at that,” he said.

The Cardinals are still on the hook for his full $4.25 million salary. They will save $187,500 in per-game roster bonuses.
