Cardinals release OLB Matt Longacre after only 4 days

The Arizona Cardinals have released another player. They announced the release of outside linebacker Matt Longacre, whom they signed on July 24.

He didn’t last long enough to make much of an impression, but it does comes as a bit of a surprise. He seemed like a good fit for the Cardinals.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury had just days ago said Longacre had “all those components you want in a football player,” referring to his toughness, smarts and play on special teams. Having played for the Los Angeles Rams under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he should have also been able to learn the defense quickly because Cardinals DC Vance Joseph runs a similar defense.

With the move, the Cardinals now have three open roster spots, which means there are surely some roster additions coming, especially at outside linebacker.

They currently have Chandler Jones, Terrell Suggs, Brooks Reed, Cameron Malveaux, Vontarrius Dora and Pita Tamoepenu. They have also used Pete Robertson, listed on the roster as an inside linebacker, at outside linebacker.
