ATLANTA _ Although they left the ballpark encouraged by how outfielder Stephen Piscotty felt late Thursday night, the Cardinals placed the second-year starter on the disabled list Friday, and they still have another decision to make on the health of center fielder Dexter Fowler.
After an exam Friday with the team's medical staff, Piscotty went on the 10-day disabled list with a strain of his right hamstring.
Outfielder Tommy Pham will join the team in Atlanta.
Piscotty injured his leg while running out a groundball during Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He told reporters after the game that initial evaluations were encouraging and that after a follow-up Friday he could join the team in Atlanta. The shortened DL stay and the extent of the injury, which has not been clarified, could have blended into the decision.
Fowler followed Piscotty to the trainers' room late Thursday with a shoulder injury that the team felt Thursday night could be the more severe of the two.
The Cardinals have not yet confirmed Fowler's diagnosis.
They did make a series of.371 transactions are prelude, however. Pham was promoted from Class AAA Memphis, where he's hit .283 with a .371 on-base percentage and four home runs to go with 19 RBIs in 25 games. Jose Martinez, who replaced Piscotty in right field, edged Pham for the fourth outfielder's job this spring training. The Cardinals also moved Jhonny Peralta to High-A Palm Beach to officially begin his rehab assignment.
