Cardinals protect WR Greg Dortch, 3 others on practice squad in Week 9

The Arizona Cardinals have protected four players on their practice squad from being signed by other teams. Teams are allowed to protect up to four players each week.

This week, Arizona has two new additions to previous weeks.

According to Wednesday’s NFL transaction report, they protected the following players:

  • WR Greg Dortch
  • OL Danny Isidora
  • LB Joe Walker
  • T David Wells

This is the first time that either Dortch or Wells have shown up on this list.

Dortch could have a role in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Receiver A.J. Green and tight end Demetrius Harris were both placed on the COVID list Wednesday. Depending on what the Cardinals do at receiver to adjust to not having him on Sunday, Dortch could see some time on offense or, what is more likely, he returns punts and perhaps kicks.

Rondale Moore usually handles both duties but if he has a greater role on offense, Dortch could have his number called to be the returner.

With Harris on the COVID list, the Cardinals only have two tight ends on the 53-man roster. Wells appears in line to be elevated to the roster and being the team’s third tight end for Sunday’s game.

Walker and Isidora have been elevated previously.

The Cardinals and 49ers kick off Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara at 2:25 p.m. Arizona time.
