The Arizona Cardinals had four compensatory drafts picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. That will not be the case in this year’s draft.
Based on Over The Cap’s projections, the Cardinals will not have any compensatory picks this year.
The league awards 32 compensatory draft picks each year based on free agent losses and gains by teams. If a team loses more free agents than it signs, they can receive draft compensation.
But the Cardinals were far more active in free agency in 2019 than were their player losses. Based on OTC’s calculations, the Cardinals lost three qualifying free agents to other teams. Outside linebacker Markus Golden signed with the New York Giants, offensive lineman Oday Aboushi signed with the Detroit Lions and offensive lineman Mike Iupati signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cardinals, in turn, signed six qualifying free agents — linebackers Jordan Hicks and Terrell Suggs, offensive linemen J.R. Sweezy and Max Garcia, quarterback Brett Hundley and cornerback Tramaine Brock. Those players cancel out their player losses.
The result? They simply will not have the extra draft picks they had a year ago.
