Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes has surgery, is done for 2018 season

Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes, who went four innings in his only start after recovering from Tommy John surgery before suffering a significant strain to his lat, had surgery on Wednesday and is done for the season.

Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said Reyes will be off the mound for six months before he can resume throwing but the team expected him to be ready for spring training in 2019.

The injury is not seen as career threatening.

Girsch said the second opinion that Reyes got from Dr. Anthony Romeo in Philadelphia confirmed what the Cardinals' doctors had seen and surgery was done.

"Based on that exam and the understanding that, because there was some fraying between the lat and the bone, based on that, they decided to do surgery after consulting with our doctors," Girsch said. "He had surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone and the good news is the tendon was partially frayed and not completely torn off which means there was good blood flow, which means they're very optimistic for recovery."

Girsch said Reyes would spend some time with his family in New Jersey before coming back to St. Louis next week to start the rehab process.

Reyes made just one appearance in his comeback. He said later he had felt soreness in the shoulder in his final rehab start, in Memphis, before rejoining the Cardinals.
