Cardinals open training camp with less than $3M in cap space

If anyone is waiting for the Arizona Cardinals to go out and make a surprise free agent signing with training camp beginning, he or she is likely going to be disappointed. They have very little salary cap space available to make moves.

According to NFLPA site, the Cardinals had $2.919 million in cap space on Wednesday when the team’s veterans reported for camp.

That number reflected 89 contracts on the roster, so it was based on  the end of last week, before they signed Sterling Bailey and cut Will Holden and Emmanuel Turner. It also does not reflect the Wednesday signing of linebacker Matt Longacre.

However, these are all moves unlikely to do much for their cap number, as only the top 53 contracts count for now.

Arizona does still have one open roster spot so they will likely add another player, but it probably will only be someone willing to sign for a minimum salary.

Arizona, unless they do some restructuring of contracts already on the team, just don’t have any money to make any significant moves.
