Cardinals no longer have top priority in waiver claims

The Arizona Cardinals do not have the worst record in the league after three weeks of the NFL season. While that is positive news, they do lose one advantage they held all offseason — the No. 1 priority in waiver claims.

Officially, with the start of Week 4, the claim order is based on current records instead of last season’s results.

At 0-2-1, the Cardinals now are No. 7 in the league’s claim order. No longer are they guaranteed to get a player off waivers they want.

Of course, the top spot in waiver claims hasn’t been overly productive for them.

In the offseason, they acquired linebacker Tanner Vallejo and tackle Desmond Harrison. Neither made it to the season.

They added five players off waiver claims after final cuts — offensive linemen Brett Toth and Justin Murray, defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard, cornerback Kevin Peterson and safety Charles Washington.

Murray has started twice at right tackle, Bullard played one game off the bench before injuring his hamstring, while Peterson and Washington have played exclusively on special teams.
