The biggest move of the offseason for the Arizona Cardinals was acquiring receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Houston Texans. A big reason why the Cardinals were able to acquire him was because he sought a contract extension with more money even though he has three years remaining on his current contract.
Thus far, nothing has happened on that end, but there isn’t necessarily anything to worry about. General manager Steve Keim intends on paying Hopkins well.
He was asked about in during a radio interview on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. He wouldn’t say whether he was in active negotiations with Hopkins, but he was willing to say this.
“It’s not my practice to talk about any type of negotiations publicly, but I will say this — we made this crystal clear from the start that we wanted to address his contract situation and certainly put him in a position that would reflect how we think of him,” Keim said.
Hopkins has no guaranteed money left on his deal and reportedly would like to be paid like the top receiver he is. Other receivers like Julio Jones average $20 million per year or more.
Getting a deal done for Hopkins will be tricky this year because they are right up against the salary cap. But with plenty of time before his deal is up, the Cardinals will definitely get something done.
