CINCINNATI _ Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez was out of whack Sunday for the second straight game since coming off the disabled list. Martinez, who had missed nearly a month with a right lat strain, walked seven and hit one in just 3 2/3 innings as and the Cardinals lost to the Cincinnati Reds 6-3.
In his two games back, Martinez has lasted a total of 7 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs and walking 12.
Martinez was thrown out at home trying to score on a double by Matt Carpenter in the top of the fourth and then had all kinds of trouble in the bottom half, walking three men, all of whom scored in a four-run inning.
The Cardinals winning streak over the Reds was snapped at 13 games, nine of them this season, and their winning streak at Great American Ball Park was snipped at 11 games, also over two seasons. Martinez had been 7-2 against the Reds but allowed 12 of the 23 men he faced to reach base.
Cardinals pitchers walked 11 in a game in which the Reds had only five hits, compared to 11 for the Cardinals. Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton saved two other hits with jumping catches and also threw out two runners on the bases.
For the second day in succession, Reds pitchers struck out 11 Cardinals hitters.
