Cardinals LB De’Vondre Campbell confident after initially ‘discouraging’ offseason

One of the defensive additions the Arizona Cardinals made this offseason was linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who signed a one-year contract. It was a bit of a surprise, considering the deals given to other productive linebackers.

The Cardinals were actually surprised he was available and that he was willing to take a one-year deal.

Campbell said it was tough to start but he believes “everything happens for a reason” and is optimistic about the season.

“It was a little bit discouraging at first, but I’m very confident in myself and I know what I’m capable of,” Campbell said in a video conference with reporters. “After talking to (defensive coordinator) Vance (Joseph) and (linebackers coach) Billy Davis and everybody else on the Cardinals staff, I was very confident in what I can bring to the organization, and I like the direction the team is going.”

Campbell had 159 tackles, two interceptions and two sacks in 2019.

He will start at inside linebacker with Jordan Hicks.

“I’m confident in Kliff (Kingsbury),” he said. “I’ve had several conversations with him. I just like the way things are headed. I think we’ve got some nice pieces on defense and we just have to continue to improve.”
