Cardinals hold on for 6-5 win, sweep Phillies

ST. LOUIS _ Busch Stadium can reacquaint itself with brooms.

It took a rather tense inning from Cardinals closer Seung Hwan Oh, but the Cardinals completed the sweep.

Starter Adam Wainwright limited the Phillies to a couple of runs over five innings, relievers held on and an offense that had been mostly dormant entering this weekend came together for a 6-5 win on Sunday at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinal's third consecutive win since general manager John Mozeliak announced changes to manager Mike Matheny's coaching staff and roster also marked the club's first sweep since one against the Marlins in a trip to Miami in early May. But Busch Stadium had not witnessed a Cardinals sweep since the Pirates dropped three games here in mid-April. A sellout crowd of 47,325 celebrated the one clinched Sunday.

Wainwright improved to 7-4 after limiting the Phillies to two runs on six hits in five innings. Tyler Lyons delivered a scoreless frame before Matt Bowman surrendered a solo homer to Daniel Nava. Trevor Rosenthal provided a scoreless eighth inning and closer Seung Hwan Oh tiptoed his way to his 15th save, surrendering two runs and leaving Phillies on first and second before it ended.

But the story on Sunday was an offense that arrived late, then stayed.

Dexter Fowler's three-run homer off Phillies starter Aaron Nola in the fifth inning gave the Cardinals a lead they never surrendered.

Tommy Pham and Eric Fryer, who again started in place of Yadier Molina (stiff back), each added an RBI single against the Phillies bullpen in the sixth.

Kolten Wong's RBI double provided much-needed insurance in the eighth.

The cushion allowed Oh to withstand RBI singles by Odubel Herrera and Howie Kendrick in the ninth.

The Cardinals, who had lost a season-high seven straight entering the series, improved to 17-15 at home this season.
