Cardinals hit four doubles in win over Indians

ST. LOUIS _ Extra-base hits have been sparse for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018. They are last in baseball in doubles, more than 10 behind the No. 29 Arizona Diamondbacks.

But two-baggers got the job done for the Cardinals Monday in a 4-0 win over a hot Cleveland Indians team. Marcell Ozuna drove in two runs with a double in the third, and Kolten Wong picked up an RBI double in the sixth.

Pitcher John Gant pitched brilliantly in his first start since May. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, quieting an Indians team that has averaged over eight runs a game the past week. The 25-year-old handed the bullpen a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Indians sole hit off Gant came on a Yan Gomes infield single in the second inning.

Jordan Hicks reached 102.8 mph on the radar gun and pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Harrison Bader drove in Yadier Molina with a single in the bottom half of the inning.

Matt Carpenter picked up three hits, and the Cardinals finished the night with four doubles, tying their season high for a single game. The win marked the Cardinals' 10,000th since joining the National League.
