Cardinals have decision to make at safety

The Arizona Cardinals have three starting-caliber safeties on the roster. In past years, this has not been a problem because either Budda Baker or Tyrann Mathieu played slot cornerback.

However, with the expected move of Budda Baker back to safety, the Cardinals now have one player too many at the position. They have Baker, Antoine Bethea and D.J. Swearinger to play two positions.

Baker is young and a budding star on a rookie deal. Swearinger is established. Bethea is old, turning 35 before the season begins.

Bethea is due to make $3 million in 2019 and is also due roster bonuses of $1.25 million. According to Over the Cap, he will count nearly $7 million against the salary cap.

If released, the Cardinals will save $4.75 million. However, his leadership has been important and he was very productive in 2018.

However, Swearinger is due to make $4.25 million and is far younger.

The Cardinals will have to decide whether to keep Bethea, redo his contract or let him go. His salary would mean he would need to play. Losing him means unproven depth and leaving potentially a void in leadership.

Moving on from Bethea is probably what will happen, but whatever happens, the Cardinals have decisions to make.
