Cardinals have a new need in offseason: backup QB

The Arizona Cardinals entered the offseason with a myriad of needs to fill. They needed to upgrade at receiver, tight end, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback and perhaps kicker.

One position that was set was at quarterback.

That is no longer the case. The team released backup quarterback Mike Glennon, leaving them with Josh Rosen, rumored to be on the trading block, and Charles Kanoff, who was an undrafted rookie a season ago who spent almost all last year on the practice squad.

So what will the Cardinals do at backup QB? The most logical answer would have been to acquire Case Keenum from the Denver Broncos, who became expendable after they agreed to a trade to acquire Joe Flacco. However, Keenum is headed to the Washington Redskins in an agreed trade.

Keenum made sense because of his connection to Kliff Kingsbury, who was his offensive coordinator in college when he set records at Houston. He is also a capable starter and great guy in the locker room.

Now what?

Do they go with a seasoned veteran with some starting experience in the league but who is unlikely to get any attention for a starting position, a la Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tyrod Taylor, Robert Griffin or Mark Sanchez?

Do they try and find a player whom Kingsbury has coached, like Davis Webb?

Do they look for someone with experience in a spread offense in college like Griffin or Brett Hundley?

Do they bring in a guy like Brock Osweiler or Geno Smith, formerly highly-touted young QBs who fell on hard times?

Or is there a bigger scheme underway where the Cardinals draft Kyler Murray, trade Josh Rosen to Washington and still manage to acquire Keenum?

It was a position of certainty to start the offseason. Now it has some of the biggest questions as free agency and the draft approach.
