Cardinals get 17-13 win over Chargers in preseason opener

It is only a preseason game, but wins are always better than losses. The Arizona Cardinals, playing in their first game under Kliff Kingsbury as head coach, picked up a preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers Thursday night at State Farm Stadium, defeating them 17-13.

The scoring was started by the Chargers. After they fumbled at the Arizona two-yard line in their opening possession after going 73 yards, they went 87 yards on nine plays to score.

Running back Justin Jackson ran it in from four yards out.

The Cardinals didn’t answer until the end of the half. Taking over possession with under two minutes in the half, They ran the two-minute offense effectively and Brett Hundley connected with Trent Sherfield for a 22-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

The Cardinals took a 10-7 lead in the third quarter with a 55-yard Zane Gonzalez field goal that would have been good from more than 60 and extended the lead to 17-7 in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard run from undrafted rookie running back Wes Hills.

Los Angeles pulled within four points at 17-13 when quarterback Easton Stick ran 31 yards for a touchdown, but the two-point attempt failed.

Arizona ran the clock out with their final possession.
