Cardinals gave ‘hard no’ to Chandler Jones’ trade request, expect LB in training camp

It was reported Sunday that Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Chandler Jones requested a trade from the team during the offseason. He is not happy with his contract status as he enters the final year of his contract.

It doesn’t appear that it will happen and a disruption in training camp also seems unlikely.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler was a guest on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM and said “there’s a pretty good chance” Jones will remain in Arizona for the 2021 season.

The team has no intentions to trading him. “I’m told it was a pretty hard no,” Fowler said of the team’s response.

He speculates the request was made back a while ago.

“I don’t know the exact date, but he wasn’t at minicamp. He wasn’t at a lot of offseason work, so I think that’s when some of the consternation was boiling a little bit,” he said. “If I had to guess, it would be early summer.”

If Jones is firm in his request, he could hold out and not show up to training camp, but he would be subject to fines of $50,000 per day.

It does not appear to be. Fowler expects him to show up. The team also expects him there and it seems he is set on getting ready fro a big year.

“In fact, I was told as far as recently he’s fired up to play with J.J. Watt.”

Jones has one year remaining on his contract and will be paid $15.5 million. It is a contract year and, coming off an injury at age 31, he “wants to get back to the 15- to 18-sack guy that most people know.
