The Cardinals and first baseman Matt Adams have agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.8 million, the Post-Dispatch confirmed Thursday.
The deal, which was first reported by MLB Network, arrived one day before the deadline that requires unsigned arbitration-eligible players and teams to swap desired salary figures.
Adams, 28, will avoid arbitration until at least next season. He is not able to enter free agency until 2019. He made $1.65 million last season.
Adams is expected to enter 2017 as a backup first baseman and bench bat, though the Cardinals have listened to trade offers for the left-handed hitting slugger.
The Cardinals are now down to four arbitration-eligible unsigned players, all pitchers: Trevor Rosenthal, Michael Wacha, Kevin Siegrist and Carlos Martinez.
