Cardinals fall to Brewers 7-5 after miscues in 10th inning

Though they came back from a 4-0 deficit, the Cardinals could not complete the comeback.

In the top of the 10th inning, second baseman Kolten Wong allowed pinch hitter Hernan Perez to reach first base. Then, closer Seung Hwan Oh gave up a go-ahead three-run homer to first baseman Travis Shaw as the Brewers took a 7-4 lead they would ultimately not relinquish.

Third baseman Jedd Gyorko hit a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth to make it 7-5, but that was all the scoring the Cardinals could muster in the frame. The loss dropped the Cardinals back under .500 to 12-13.

The Cardinals started off the game with a threat, loading the bases with two outs in the first inning for catcher Yadier Molina. However, Molina could not get a run home, as he flew out to center field and slammed his bat down in frustration.

Cardinals starter Michael Wacha began the game well, facing the minimum eight batters through two outs in the third inning. That roll quickly came to and end when opposing pitcher Zach Davies singled and second baseman Jonathan Villar promptly launched a 450-foot home run. It was the fourth home run Wacha has allowed in his five starts.

The Brewers continued to tack on runs, adding to their lead with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Catcher Manny Pina singled off Wacha to drive in right fielder Domingo Santana in the fourth while left fielder Eric Thames doubled home Villar in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals responded quickly though. With one out in the frame, shortstop Aledmys Diaz and first baseman Matt Carpenter knocked back-to-back solo home runs, cutting the deficit in half to 4-2.

The sixth inning featured baserunning blunders by both squads, as the Brewers grounded into a double play when third baseman Travis Shaw was thrown out at home, and as Wong was caught in a rundown between third base and home plate.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth when the Cardinals tied the game at 4. Gyorko led off the inning with the Cardinals' third solo home run of the night and his first, and Stephen Piscotty later scored after Wong had an infield single bounce of Villar's glove.

In the ninth, Oh did not allow the Brewers to score, while the Cardinals went down in order. The 10th was a different story though.

The Cardinals and Brewers will reconvene Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. for the second game of this four-game series.
