Cardinals' Dexter Fowler, hit by pitch in knee, still gimpy

PITTSBURGH _ Dexter Fowler, hit on the right knee by a pitch on Saturday, was not in Sunday's Cardinals lineup although the club has not replaced him.

John Mozeliak, president of baseball operations, said Fowler still was classified as "day to day," indicating that no roster move would be made immediately. But on Sunday, the Cardinals went with 24 players.

Miles Mikolas, who has the National League's second longest winning streak at six, was seeking to go 7-0 when he faced the Pittsburgh Pirates. He took a no decision here on April 27 although he allowed just two runs in seven innings.

Tyler O'Neill replaced Fowler in right field. Yairo Munoz was back at shortstop after a two-hit game on Saturday and Kolten Wong was at second base, with Jedd Gyorko sitting. Carson Kelly caught Mikolas. For the second day in succession, Matt Carpenter, Jose Martinez and Tommy Pham will hit 1-2-3. The three combined for six hits on Saturday and Carpenter doubled in his first two at-bats on Sunday.

"When something looks right, it looks right and you don't necessarily mess with it," manager Mike Matheny said.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli was a late scratch from the Pirates' lineup with flu-like symptoms. Cardinals bench coach Mike Shildt was hit in the head by a Starling Marte while Shildt was in the dugout during the Pirates' first inning. But Shildt suffered only a contusion and was cleared to return.
