Cardinals cut K Cole Murphy, sign P Ryan Winslow

The Arizona Cardinals made a roster move, swapping a pair of specialists. They released kicker Cole Murphy, whom they signed earlier in the offseason, and announced the signing of punter Ryan Winslow.

Winslow was an undrafted rookie a year ago who was in camp with the Chicago Bears, but he was released before the season.

He played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh and, as a senior in 2017, was an All-ACC first-team selection. He led the ACC with a 44.5-yard average on 57 punts.

This gives the Cardinals two punters on the roster and one kicker. Because of punter Andy Lee’s age, the addition was likely to give him fewer reps in the spring and to audition someone else. Likewise, it will give Zane Gonzalez more reps to see, as he has yet to establish him as a reliable NFL kicker.

It is typical for teams to have either two punters or two kickers in the offseason. As things appear now, though, Gonzalez seems to be the favorite to be the team’s 2019 kicker.
