DENVER _ Ninth time was not the charm.
The Cardinals failed to get 10 games better than .500 for the first time this season again Wednesday, and they did so with a proper thumping from the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. In position to sweep the Rockies, stay ahead in the wild-card race, and get to 10 games better than .500 for the first time this season, the Cardinals did none of that.
They lost 11-1.
The highlight for the Cardinals was four scoreless innings of relief by Jaime Garcia.
They fell to 0-9 when trying to get to the difficult 10-games-above mark.
Nolan Arenado finished the game 2-for-3 with a grand slam, and the Rockies hit two home runs in the rout.
Cardinals rookie starter Luke Weaver (1-4) allowed seven hits and six runs over two innings in his Coors Field debut. He had allowed 12 earned runs in his last seven starts combined.
