Cardinals cannot have no-baseball clause in Kyler Murray’s contract, says a former agent

The Arizona Cardinals’ top pick in the 2019 NFL draft is quarterback Kyler Murray, who made history by becoming the first player to be selected in the first round of both the NFL and MLB drafts.

Up until a couple of months ago, Murray didn’t know whether he was going to play baseball or football.

He chose football, but some worry he might want to return to baseball. It’s been suggested that the Cardinals include a no-baseball clause in his contract.

According to former agent Joel Corry, they cannot.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had such a clause in quarterback Jameis Winston’s contract, but that cannot be added to any new contracts, per Corry.

This doesn’t mean there is reason for the Cardinals to worry.

According to NFL Network’s Michael Silver, the team and Murray’s agent have an agreement on some protection for the team if he decides to go back to baseball. Murray himself declared his future “is only in football right now.”
