Cardinals begin Week 1 in decent spot with salary cap

The Arizona Cardinals did not have a lot of salary cap space towards the end of the preseason. That appears to have changed. As they get set to play their season opener, they have more than $8 million in cap space, according to the NFLPA’s website on Sunday morning.

They have $8.19 million in cap space. A good chunk of that comes because of cornerback Patrick Peterson’s suspension. His six-game suspension causes him to forfeit $3.88 million in salary. That goes back to the Cardinals’ cap.

According to Over The Cap, they have $1.87 million in cap space.

The Cardinals are carrying a ton of dead money. They are second in the league in dead money against this year’s salary cap with more than $35 million.

More than $16 million of that comes from the contracts of Sam Bradford, Josh Rosen and Mike Glennon, three quarterbacks no longer on the roster.
