Cardiff waste collections face delays due to Christmas recycling backlog

Cardiff Council has warned of delays to waste collections across the city due to a build-up of post-Christmas recycling.

The backlog is down to the Christmas and New Years celebrations.

A number of residents received an email from the council on Thursday telling them they would not be collecting the green bags for recycling on their collection day.

However, the council posted a statement on social media on January 5 to inform residents that the delays were not due to staff shortages or Covid but because there was a high volume of recycling after the holidays.

The council said: “Increased volumes of recycling following Christmas and New Year means that some rounds are not completing on the scheduled collection day.

"If your recycling or Christmas tree is not collected as scheduled please leave it presented at the kerbside and we will collect them as soon as possible.”

Waste collection across the city has been impacted a number of times throughout the pandemic due to staff shortages.

The peak of the issues came in July last year, when Cardiff council’s cabinet faced a vote of no confidence as opposition councillors said residents are complaining about missed collections "every single hour".
