Cardiff v Scarlets Boxing Day derby called off due to Covid cases

The Boxing Day derby match between Cardiff and the Scarlets has been postponed after Covid cases were found in Dai Young's Cardiff squad.

The United Rugby Championship match was due to be played at Cardiff Arms Park on December 26.

It is a bitter blow for Welsh rugby fans after Ospreys v Dragons on Boxing Day was also postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the Swansea-based region.

Cardiff said: "A number of positive Covid-19 cases have been found within the squad."

It would have been the first match behind closed doors after First Minister Mark Drakeford announced a tightening of restrictions to combat the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

But the United Rugby Championship (URC) Medical Advisory Group and Public Health Wales deemed the fixture could not take place as scheduled.

Scarlets said on Christmas Day: "Our URC fixture against Cardiff Rugby on Boxing Day has been postponed following a number of positive Covid-19 cases within the Cardiff squad We wish everyone affected at Cardiff well."

The URC is now considering available dates to reschedule the game.
