Cardiff University student found not guilty of rape

A Cardiff University student accused of rape has been found not guilty.

Nicholas Beanland, 24, was accused of raping a woman who claimed she woke up to find him having sex with her.

The defendant, of Larch Close, Kingsworthy, Hampshire, denied the accusation, which was alleged to have happened in Cardiff in 2018.

Having initially faced trial at Cardiff Crown Court in September last year a jury was unable to agree a verdict.

A second trial took place earlier this month and again a jury was unable to agree a verdict and were discharged.

At a mention hearing at the same court on Friday prosecutor Roger Griffiths indicated the Crown Prosecution Service would not be seeking a retrial and offered no evidence.

Judge Daniel Williams indicated a no guilty verdict and court proceedings against the defendant have reached a conclusion.
