Cardiff today – city centre roadworks and allotment review

Good morning Cardiff!

Today the Ely Wheelies to the Bay will start at 10.30am as part of Bike Week – read more about it here.

This afternoon the economy and culture scrutiny committee will meet and be presented with a progress report on the review of the city's allotment strategy. We'll bring you a report from this meeting.

There's also a boutique open today for Cancer Research Wales in the Capitol shopping centre.

In the news, Cardiff city centre will face travel disruptions over the summer when work begins on the Castle Street crossing on Sunday to make way for the pedestrianisation of St Mary Street and High Street.

Executive member for transport, Delme Bowen, said:

"This work is going to dramatically improve the north end of the city and is integral to what we are doing with High Street and St Mary Street. Like we have seen with the Duke Street junction the end results will more than justify the disruption that this work will cause.

"However, as we learnt with the Duke Street work, if drivers are sensible and can find alternative routes for their journeys while this work is going on then disruption really can be kept to an absolute minimum.

"This work is integral to the Council's vision of a re-invigorated Castle Quarter, which can only enhance and improve the city centre of Cardiff."

Slow worms have been relocated from a Cardiff housing development to an old landfill site, reports BBC Wales.

Warren Evans Court and the Three Elms Pub were on the hotlist of topics from the Whitchchurch pact meeting reports My Whitchurch.

"What of the local communities who listened to their local station to hear people who talk like they do and talk about the things they care about? The lives the presenters of the new Heart FM lead in London is far removed from the lives their listeners lead in Pwllheli, Menai Bridge and Conwy.

In an era where localism seems to matter more than ever, and there are more powers being devolved to the Assembly and local authorities there will be fewer individuals keeping watch over them and fewer people informed of their activities as a result."

In sport, Cardiff Blues are getting into the cycling spirit by offering a free family season ticket and four bikes to mark Bike Week. More here.
