Cardiff school wins Green Flag despite impending closure

A Cardiff school which is due for closure has been praised for its engagement with environment and sustainability issues.

Pupils and staff at Cefn Onn Primary school in in Llanishen, which is due to close in 2012, overwhelmed assessors for the International Eco-Schools Green Flag award, who felt the school had maintained positive thinking in the face of adversity.

The assessors from Keep Wales Tidy awarded the school with their second Green Flag after spending a morning talking to the pupils and staff and being shown around the school grounds, where pupils have been working to save energy and water since achieving their first Green Flag two years ago. Even though pupil numbers are falling weekly, the judges felt it has maintained their high standards environmental management.

Keep Wales Tidy's Eco-Schools Officer for Cardiff, Bryony Butcher, said:

"I was incredibly moved by the enthusiasm, knowledge and motivation of the pupils and staff at Cefn Onn. It is easy to slip into the downwards spiral when closure looms overhead, but this school has fought against that and shown an inspiring level of positive thinking, creativity and innovation, something that we could all learn from in the current climate."

Cefn Onn was awarded 'Green School of the Year' in Cardiff by the Council's Waste Education team at an event in City Hall last month and hosted a visit from David Bellamy to plant trees last Autumn.
