Cardiff school pupil dies suddenly at start of the summer holidays

Tributes have been paid to a "hugely popular" sixth form pupil at a school in Cardiff who has died.

Tina Way, 17, was a pupil at Cardiff West Community High School in Caerau but she sadly died at the start of the summer holidays, the school said.

The school broke up for summer on July 22.

Mr Martin Hulland, head teacher of Cardiff West Community High School, said: “Tina was a hugely popular sixth form student who participated fully in all aspects of school life.

"Tina always adopted a positive attitude and our school community has found this loss difficult to comprehend.

“To all of those who knew Tina and were touched by her life, the school offers our deepest and most sincere condolences.

"Our thoughts are with Tina’s friends and family at this time.”

The funeral is being held on Monday, August 5, at the Church of the Resurrection on Grand Avenue in Ely and at Western Cemetery.

The wake will be held at Glamorgan Wanderers RFC.

Local councillor, Elaine Simmons, added: "I'm really sorry. My thoughts are with the family."

A force spokeswoman added: "We are investigating the sudden death of a 17-year-old girl at an address in Ely, Cardiff, on July 20.

"Her death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"The family are being supported by specially trained officers. Enquiries are ongoing and HM Coroner have been informed."

Pontypridd Coroners Court said it would be reviewing the case later this year into whether an inquest will take place.

South Wales Police said it was treating the death as unexplained.
