Cardiff's 'plastic fantastic' Christmas tree that almost everyone says looks half-finished

A Christmas tree has been erected in Cardiff's Central Square - and some people have shown no mercy when giving their initial opinion of it online.

Trade group BID FOR Cardiff is behind the towering metal structure adorned with Christmas lights, which was installed in front of Cardiff Central Station on Tuesday.

Executive director Adrian Field confirmed the tree itself was complete and would be lit up, however he was tight-lipped about the exact details of the "activation" of the lights, which will take place on November 12.

But not all were impressed with the concept, with many claiming it looked half-finished.

Facebook user Jenny Winter joked: "Looks like they are still building it, like the bus station!", while Maggie Dick insisted that it was surely "just the frame".

"Absolutely stunning. What a fantastic piece of work. When will it be ready, Xmas 2025?" quipped Ashley McGill.

"Someone’s left their scaffolding in the middle of Cardiff," said Twitter user Dylan Thomas.

Meanwhile others lamented the absence of a "normal" tree.

On Twitter, Owen Williams said: "Whatever happened to actual real trees? Cardiff is the capital city of a green, wooded, precipitation-laden land. Could we not have some actual trees in the city centre? Why does everything have to be concrete slab-grey?

"Well it suits the surroundings. Cold, sterile, lifeless, all design - no feeling," said Facebook user Ross Taylor.

Similarly, others dubbed it "plastic fantastic" and likened it to a pylon.

But some defended the design, like Facebook user Ian O'B, who said: "It looked really awesome when it was lit up and they were testing the lights. Don’t judge until it’s finished and lit up."

"Will obviously look better when it's dark and lit up," pointed out Ross Frewen.

Many harked back to the controversial Christmas tree put up in 2016, which was supposed to be installed for three years, at £10,000 a year, was scrapped by Cardiff Council after just a year.

Adorned with gold baubles, the artificial tree caused outrage across Wales. The sculpture, which was imported from China, was ridiculed online and compared to a pile of Ferrero Rocher.

Of the current Christmas tree, Facebook user Simon Wall commented: "The genius that picked this tree for £10,00 a year on a three-year contract must be back in charge", while Kerrianne Trotman added: "Let’s hope it’s better than the gold baubles !"
