Cardiff's historic Rompney Castle pub to be demolished and replaced with more flats

A historic pub in Cardiff is set to be demolished and replaced with flats.

The Rompney Castle has been on Wentloog Road in Rumney for nearly 150 years, but now faces demolition after closing down and being sold during lockdown.

It is set to be replaced by 26 one-bedroom apartments, as well as a commercial unit and parking spaces, with developers set to apply to Cardiff Council for full planning permission.

The pub, which was built around 1872 and was formerly known as the Pear Tree Inn, was reputed to a be favourite haunt of pirates, who stowed their “ill-gotten gains” in or around the inn before using the nearby Rhymney River to slip away undetected.

Cardiff-based architectural firm Sundar Architects, who have been commissioned to work on the project, added that the apartment block would provide "a very high standard of accommodation in keeping with the area".

However, Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust have raised concerns about the proposals, indicating that the pub may have been built alongside an ancient road which could run within the boundary of the residential development.

The proposals come after it was announced that another historic building in Cardiff Bay was set to be turned into apartments and a former BBC studio with "huge potential for conversion into flats" was put on the market for £1.2m.

Anyone who wishes to make representations about the proposed development can do so via Amity Planning's online feedback form or by post or email at info@amityplanning.co.uk.
