Cardiff's best curry house Salkaara opens second Bristol restaurant

A curry house which has earned rave reviews since opening in Cardiff three years ago has launched its second Bristol restaurant.

Salkaara was rated as the best restaurant in the Welsh capital on Tripadvisor in 2019, and remains in the top 10 today.

Visitors often praise the quality of its authentic Indian dishes and its 'first-rate' service, which is what prompted the team behind it to open a restaurant across the channel in Bristol.

Salkaara opened in Henleaze in July 2020 and got off to an impressive start, receiving similar reviews to those its Cardiff restaurant earned.

One reviewer described their curry as "one of the best we’ve had in ages" after visiting soon after its launch.

And now, spurred on by the praise their first Bristol restaurant has received, the Salkaara team have opened a second site in the city, this time on Gloucester Road.

Salkaara Street offers a more casual dining experience than its sister venues, serving traditional Indian street food dishes such as thalis, dosas and light bites.

There's also the option of more substantial 'street curries' for diners with emptier stomachs.

"We got off to a great start in Cardiff and things are going well in Henleaze too despite lockdown restrictions, so we wanted to add a third restaurant which offers a more laid-back experience," said Vipin Vasudevan, one of Salkaara's directors.

"Our menu at Salkaara Street features plenty of quick and tasty dishes, which have been getting some really positive feedback so far."

Salkaara Street started out as a takeaway service in March before lockdown restrictions were eased, allowing it to open for dine-in customers in May.

It's headed up by Vipin and experienced chef Santhosh Nair, who met each other while working at Mint & Mustard in Cardiff.

"Santhosh is extremely passionate about his cooking and absolutely everything is made fresh on-site," added Vipin. "He likes to let the food do the talking.

"The dishes he makes are exactly like what you would find in India - the only difference is that he turns the heat down a little bit.

"We're really excited to be up and running on Gloucester Road, in a fantastic area with a really close-knit community."

Salkaara Street is located at 185 Gloucester Rd, Bishopston, Bristol BS7 8BG. More information can be found on its Facebook page.
