Cardiff Rugby star wakes up to tragic news while stuck in quarantine

Cardiff’s Keiron Assiratti has posted a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather who has died while the Arms Park prop has been in isolation.

The former Wales U20s tighthead is one of 32 players who are in hotel quarantine across two locations, in Cape Town and Crawley, in the wake of the region’s Covid-hit trip to South Africa.

On Wednesday morning, he received the news of the death of his grandfather, who was clearly a big influence on his playing career.

Wattstown product Assiratti, who has made 47 appearances for Cardiff Rugby since making his debut in January 2017, has taken to Instagram to speak about his loss.

"I’ve woken up to the worst news possible while stuck in isolation," the 24-year-old forward said.

"My best friend, my gramp has passed.

"I’m thankful for everything you’ve ever done for me.

"If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be in this privileged situation I’m in now.

"I love you endlessly, sleep tight up there gramp. Love you lots."
