Cardiff riots: Crowd clash with cops after 'serious crash' as fires lit and fireworks thrown

A large crowd has gathered on an estate following a 'serious crash' in Cardiff with witnesses saying police are being pelted with objects.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the scene of the crash in Snowden Road, Ely, Cardiff, tonight.

There are multiple emergency services in the area and a large crowd of people gathered with the force saying there was "ongoing disorder".

There have been some objects thrown at police and shouting and screaming as police with dogs attempting to move the crowd back.

South Wales Police said in a Facebook post: "Emergency services are at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on Snowden Road, Ely. The road is closed between Wilson Road and Jackson Road. Please avoid the area and take an alternative route."

Earlier the force tweeted: "There is now a large number of officers working to manage the collision, but also to de-escalate ongoing disorder at the scene. We urge anyone involved to leave the scene immediately and ask local residents to stay away while the matter is brought to a safe conclusion."

Images from the scene show a large number of objects being thrown at police with people gesticulating at officers carrying riot shields.

Police are then charging forwards to push the rioters back again.

A line of officers are also on Stanway Road, with a large fire in the highway in front of them and a large number of people gathered.

A police helicopter also appeared to be hovering over the scene.

John Urquhart, 39, a local resident, said he found out what was happening from his neighbour at around 8pm.

"They said, 'how did you not hear it, it’s been going on for 20 minutes'. I got my backpack and came out to find a very large crowd at the corner of Wilson Road and Jackson road. There were about 30 police vehicles and 10 to 15 on Stanway Road.

"I spoke to the police and asked if they had any information. The police officer told me [about the incident] he also told me he couldn’t give me any more information.

"I went home for a few minutes and then came across a police officer pushing a young kid in Wilson Road.

"It calmed down in Wilson Road - the I saw smoke was between Wilson Road and Stanway Road. The mood hasn’t been great. Because of the high police presence I think a clash was inevitable.”
