Cardiff parking charges hiked by up to 20%

Commuters in Cardiff face new increases in on-street car parking charges of up to 20%.

Cardiff council has hiked the charges on long stay on-street pay and display parking spaces throughout the city centre from April 15.

It means motorists would have to pay around a fifth more to park for longer than seven hours at many of the city's on-street parking spaces.

The council says the price of car parking remains competitive compared to cities of a similar size to Cardiff.

Parking charges in Cardiff set to go up....again

What has the council said?

A council spokesman said:  “The council reviews parking tariffs every two years and an increase in charges for on street parking was agreed in the 2019-20 budget.  Parking charges in Cardiff remain competitive when compared with other UK cities of a similar size and demographic.

“The aim of our parking strategy is to balance the parking and access of requirements of residents, businesses, commuters and visitors with the need to support our wider transport strategy and achieve our aspiration of a 60/40 modal split in favour of sustainable modes of transport by 2024.

“Any surplus from parking charges is reinvested into transport projects that help keep Cardiff moving.”
