Cardiff nightclub denies refusing pair entry because they were speaking Welsh

A nightclub which was accused of refusing two men entry because they were speaking Welsh has denied the claims.

Pulse nightclub on Churchill Way in Cardiff city centre was accused by Neil Roberts of denying him and his friend entry on Friday, December 17 as they were speaking Welsh in the queue.

On Twitter on Saturday Mr Roberts wrote: "Very disappointed with Pulse Cardiff after last night when their bouncer refused me and my friend entry for 'speaking another language'.

"Not only is it wrong to refuse entry on that basis, it's also illegal to deny someone the right to speak the Welsh language in Wales.”

The tweet was shared more than 700 times and has almost 9,000 likes.

In response Pulse nightclub said it would never refuse anyone entry on the basis they were speaking a different language, and said Mr Roberts and his friend were refused entry due to covid pass issues.

Mr Roberts continued: "It's true that both me and my friend were drunk, and emotions did run high but it has caused us massive upset that our legal rights were breached and used against us, and that nobody took that breach seriously. Any person speaking Welsh in Wales deserves that right to be protected.

"Safe to say we won't be letting it go and will want it investigated properly.

"I will be speaking to the Welsh Language Commission on what we can do next."

In response a spokesperson for Pulse said: “We are aware of an exchange on Friday night whereby a customer was unable to satisfy a request relating to a covid pass.

“In addition to this it became clear that the customer was intoxicated and therefore could not be admitted in line with the conditions of our licence designed to keep customers safe.

“Needless to say, no one was refused entry for speaking Welsh. Nor would this ever be the case.”
