Cardiff gig venue 10 Feet Tall and Cornish Bakehouse under threat by landlord's plans

Cardiff nightclub 10 Feet Tall could be replaced with a restaurant and offices as the landlords submit plans to redevelop the building.

Proposals to transform the site that's home to the popular nightspot on Church Street into a restaurant and business space have been submitted to Cardiff Council.

Floorplans show that the owners want to redevelop the building to include a restaurant on the ground floor with the kitchen and prep space located in the basement and office space on the first, second and third floors.

The application, lodged by Haines Phillips Architects on behalf of the landowners, said the applicant "envisages letting the commercial areas to a single tenant as a dental practice, hair and beauty salon or as offices."

If given the go ahead the plans would also affect the Cornish Bakehouse nextdoor.

10 Feet Tall opened its doors back in 2008 and has a bar on one floor and space for live music on another. The venue has established itself as a popular spot for music - giving local bands as well as up and coming tour acts a chance to hone their skills. It also operates as a late night nightclub closing at 4am.

Meanwhile, the award-winnning Cornish Bakehouse is owned family-run business its Church Street shop has stood for more than a decade.

Planning documents say the applicant, the Shah Pension Scheme and its trustees, believe changing the building from a nightclub to include commercial space "should be welcomed" because it would "improve the balance" of what’s on offer in the city centre.

It adds: "The vitality and viability of the city centre would not be impacted."

A spokesman for Cornish Bakehouse said it hadn't been informed of the plans and that the business still has a lease for the building.

10 Feet Tall was also contacted for comment.
