Cardiff family fined after being told twice by police not to travel to west Wales holiday let

A family were sent home and issued with fines by police after travelling nearly 100 miles from their home in Cardiff to a holiday let in west Wales.

Both the NHS and the Welsh Government's advice has been clear in urging people not to travel or visit their second homes and holiday lets during the coronavirus lockdown.

But Dyfed-Powys Police, which has been patrolling roads across west Wales to ensure all journeys are essential, said the Cardiff family continued to flout the rules after being asked to turn around.

The family then continued on to their destination at Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire, until police located them again and issued the occupants with fines before escorting them back.

Dyfed-Powys Police pulled over around 1,300 vehicles over the bank holiday weekend in a bid to to stop holidaymakers travelling to coastal areas amid the lockdown.

Amongst the 1,300 vehicles were a group of nine travelling from Bristol, Aberdare and Weston Supermare to Tenby in the hope of partaking in a spot of crabbing.

Police officers issued the group with penalty notices as 'crabbing' is not deemed an essential journey.

Officers also set up a road block at the A40 at Canaston Bridge as a checkpoint for travellers heading to the area.

Police were stopping and checking every vehicle entering the area after the First Minister Mark Drakeford said that second home owners were still travelling to Pembrokeshire despite continuous and clear warnings.

In another incident a couple were fined and sent home before they could complete a 430-mile round trip to 'collect a motorbike' in Milford Haven.

Dyfed-Powys Police said of the latest incident: "Despite directions to turn around, a family from Cardiff continued to flout the rules and made their way to a holiday let in Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire."

"Vehicle was located one mile from its destination. Occupants issued fines in relation to COVID19 and escorted back."
