Cardiff council has given its gritters names - and they're great

When the weather is a bit grim, we all need a reason to raise a smile on our face.

And this winter, Cardiff council's gritters may well do just that. They've all been given weather-related puns as names, in both English and Welsh.

The Welsh names aren't direct translations, but their own puns.

In Welsh, football hero Hal Robson-Kanu's first name is turned into Halen - Welsh for salt. Children's hero Sali Mali's name gets a tweak to Sali Malu Eira from Mali to malu (break up) and eira (snow).

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, also known as Llywelyn Ein Llyw Olaf, has Llyw switched for Lluwch, meaning snowdrift. Caryl Chwalu Lôns is a homage to Welsh singer, actress and presenter Caryl Parry-Jones.
