Cardiff City v Middlesbrough player ratings as uncharacteristic error proves costly and creativity a problem again

Ryan Allsop 5

Quite how much he could do for the goals is arguable, but just never looked totally convincing.

Mahlon Romeo 5

Positive to see him back. Plugs so many gaps and brings a balance to the defence. A welcome return, all things considered.

Cedric Kipre 6

Made a couple of crunching challenges and looked generally solid and good in the air. Might have done better with a header on goal, but it bounced over the bar.

Mark McGuinness 6

Positionally excellent and made some big challenges early on. Barely put a foot out of line all afternoon - again.

Callum O'Dowda 5

So unlike him to give the ball away for Boro's second goal. Was his typical, consistently good self until then and afterwards, to be fair.

Joe Ralls 5

Tried his best to play the ball forward as often as he could and stuck a foot in. Had one effort from range saved well.

Romaine Sawyers 6

Ticked things over but at a slower pace than many would have liked. He does add composure in an otherwise frenetic team, though. Became more influential later on.

Sheyi Ojo 5

Didn't see a great deal of him, which is not what we are used to. He usually tries to take players on at will, but a quiet one for him.

Callum Robinson 6 (STAR MAN)

Really smart to intercept Zack Steffen's pass before setting up Kaba for his goal. Moved out to the wing in the second half and looked better as the game went on.

Jaden Philogene 5

Another who threatened to cause problems, but in reality didn't add much at the top end of the pitch on this occasion. Could have won a penalty, but a free-kick was given on the edge of the box.

Sory Kaba 6

A mixed bag. Great for him to get a goal on his home debut, but his hold-up play struggled. It led to Middlesbrough's first goal, in fact. Improved after the break.

Subs:

Ryan Wintle (Ojo 57) 5 - Put in a good corner for Kipre, who should have scored with the header. Hit too many first men with crosses.

Andy Rinomhota (Ralls 57) 6 - Hit one shot sweetly from 30 yards, but it whistled wide. Improved the midfield, though.

Perry Ng (Romeo 70) 5 - Looked OK when he came on. Hammered one shot wide from long range.

Kion Etete (Kaba 70) 6 - Impressive after he came on. Won balls, held it up and brought others into play.

Isaak Davies (Philogene 86) NA
