Cardiff City transfer news: Blackburn Rovers, Barnsley and Ipswich Town join Middlesbrough in race for Bluebirds ace as outgoing star voices regret

Here are your Cardiff City transfer headlines for Thursday, August 8

Host of clubs register interest in Ciaron Brown

Blackburn Rovers, Barnsley and Ipswich Town have joined Middlesbrough in the race to sign Cardiff City's Ciaron Brown, according to Football League World.

Mick McCarthy last week revealed the Bluebirds turned down an offer from Middlesbrough for the defender, declaring that the bid tabled was "nowhere near enough".

The Northern Ireland international has gained admirers since returning from his third Livingston loan back in January and played a key role towards the back end of the campaign last year.

McCarthy has brought in former Arsenal youngster Mark McGuinness, though, to add extra competition to an already well-stocked position.

And a number of clubs now appear to be looking at making a move to prise him away from the Welsh capital, with League One outfit Ipswich reportedly joining Cardiff's Championship rivals Boro, Blackburn and Barnsley in wanting to sign the 23-year-old.

McCarthy has stated on more than one occasion he wants the centre back to stay and has even offered him a new contract.

But whether any of the above clubs test the water with sizeable bids remains to be seen.

Jonny Williams rues how it played out at Cardiff

Jonny Williams has expressed his disappointment at how his Cardiff City journey played out.

The Wales international was brought in at the end of January until the end of the season, but had scant opportunities to press his case for a contract extension.

He expressed back in the summer that he was somewhat surprised that he was let go, seemingly having been led to believe that he would be kept on.

But ultimately the decision was made to let him go and, despite it not working out as planned, Williams offered his thanks to the supporters who backed him during his short stay.

"Late message due to the Euros. Just wanted to thank all of the CCFC fans for the support since I joined," he wrote on Instagram.

"Shame it didn’t work out the way I wanted but wishing @cardiffcityfc all the best for this season. Looking forward to the next chapter."

He remains a free agent.

Ex-Bluebirds find new clubs

Two former promising academy stars have found new clubs ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Merthyr Town have announced the signing for midfielder Frazer Thomas, the 18-year-old who scored the winner in the mini South Wales derby.

The manager of the Southern League Premier Division South side, Dean Clarke, said: "I'm really pleased to get Frazer's signature over the line. After some good competition, I'm delighted to win the race to sign him, he’s an exciting talent with loads of potential.

"He’s creative with a lot of energy and as the fans have seen in pre season, he can chip in with goals too. "

It comes after last week Jack Bodenham signed for South Shields.

Bodenham, 21, was always a consistent performer in the Bluebirds academy and captained the club at all age groups, but never really got a fair crack of the whip at senior level.

The Northern Premier League Premier Division side expressed their delight at the former Wales youth international's signing and the player himself is excited about the new challenge ahead.

“It’s great to be here," the defender said.

“From the moment I started speaking to Graham (Fenton, the manager) about joining the club, everything about it seemed really exciting and it was something I wanted to be a part of.

“The club seems to be going in the right direction and it’s exciting to be part of the group now.”
